October 22, 2015 by Brynne 5 Comments

Hey you guys! Welcome to another week of Thrift Score Thursday!

I have an exciting announcement for you today, so it’s going to go right up here at the top of the post so you don’t miss it…

Thrift Score Thursday: Halloween Editions!

Or should I say “Thrift SCARE Thursday”?

Over the next two weeks, we want to see your Halloween-themed thrift finds!

  • Whether it’s costumes thrifted in whole or in part, Halloween decor featuring thrifted elements, or even just the spookiest creepiest thrift finds you spy out at the thrift store, share them using #thriftscorethursday so we can see them!
  • On Thursday, 10/27: The regular Thrift Score Thursday hosts – myself, Cassie from Primitive and Proper, Trisha from Black and White Obsession, and Corinna from A Designer at Home – will be joined by SIX surprise guest hosts sharing maximum thrifted Halloween inspiration!
  • On Thursday, 11/5: Two guest hosts will join us in spotlighting YOUR Halloween-themed #thriftscorethursday submissions! Since it’s the Thursday after Halloween, you’ll have plenty of time to snap last-minute costume selfies 😉
  • What about those other non-Halloween-related thrift finds? Feel free to continue sharing any and all lucky scores. We just wanted to let you know about our big Halloween Feature on 11/5 so you can join in!

The Features:

Want to know how I feel about these upcoming thrifty shenanigans? Kayla’s awesome find just about sums it up… (via @thegildedbear)

In other words…

^ This adorable brass memo holder was found by Megan (@thehomesihavemade) in a slightly-less-adorable state. She gave it a shiny new makeover which you can find here along with a freebie productivity printable!

Britt (@themagpiecollective) is a girl after my own heart! She also lives in Texas and, based upon her shop’s name, presumably also loves collecting shiny things. (Fun fact: when I was originally brainstorming names for The Gathered Home, I definitely had images of magpies running through my head!) And we both love vintage educational charts!

Finally, allow me to introduce you to another new-to-me must-follow Instagrammer: Gloria (@gloriajoy)! She shared this shot of her office featuring a vintage chandelier find and this incredibly energetic and chic orange rug, which was a $50 Craigslist score! What an inspiring work-space, right?!

My Find:

In my Nautical Naturalist Guest Room reveal I shared back in May, this butterfly print I found at the thrift store played a pretty big role in pulling everything together:

It’s a Common Buckeye butterfly, by the way.

I’d actually found it several months earlier and, as hoarders tend to do, held onto it while I waited for the perfect place to use it.

When I pulled it back out again for this makeover, the nearly illegible signature in the bottom right really started to eat at me. I started at the signature over and over and tried to decipher it:

My best guess: John Ideuskee

Which, Google informed me, was not, nor ever had been, someone’s real name.

So I turned to you awesome people on Instagram and Facebook and we all took stabs at figuring it out.

Shout-out to Bobbie who suggested “Jack Henslee”- winner winner!

Despite how unlikely it seemed at first (Jack Henslee is a Fort Worth, Texas-based pin-up artist: correct location, completely different subject matter), I decided to dig a little further and send an email through his website.

I didn’t really expect to hear anything back, so I wasn’t surprised when several weeks went by with no reply. I was actually cleaning out my email’s Spam folder when I noticed that it had filtered out a response from the Henslees!

The butterfly is indeed a piece from Jack, created sometime during the 80’s in a period where he focused on wildlife and Native American subjects.

Mystery solved! (With a little help from my friends.)

What an incredible feeling!

Honestly, I get a little emotional when I think about the wonderful thrifting community and the awesomeness that is the ability to put our collective minds together… Today a thrift mystery, tomorrow – who knows?

So I wanted to put the call out: if you have an unsolved thrift find mystery, #thriftscorethursday is on the case! Let’s combine forces and sleuth away!
